The theatrical Greek masks were used in open-air theatres like the theatre of Dionusys in Athens. The masks were covering the entire face and head with an integrated wig and only small holes for the mouth and eyes. The masks would frequently have over-exaggerated facial features in order to bring the character’s face closer to the audience. Because the number of actors usually varied from one to three, and women were not allowed to play, they had to wear different masks to play more roles and also female roles. Thus, the use of different masks prevented the audience from identifying the actors.
