Bronze hand made sphinx.

The name sphinx comes from the Greek “sphingo”, meaning “to strangle”. The Greek sphinx was a creature that had the head of a woman, the body of a lion, the tail of a serpent and the wings of an eagle. The Sphinx is said to have guarded the entrance to the Greek city of Thebes and would force travelers to answer a riddle to allow them passage.  The riddle was: "What is it that has one voice, and yet becomes four-footed and two-footed and three-footed?". Anyone unable to render the correct answer was immediately slain. One day, Oedipus, prince of Thebes, guessed the right answer: "Man, who crawls on all fours in infancy, walks on two feet when grown, and leans on a staff in old age". The sphinx was so distraught that threw herself from the mountain and Oedipus was acclaimed king.
