Leonidas of Sparta

Leonidas I (about 540 BC - 480 BC) was the king of Sparta from the Agiadon dynasty. He ascended to the throne in 488 BC. Leonidas assumed the leadership of the Greek army and successfully managed to keep them united. His military intelligence became apparent in August 480 BC. in the Strait of Thermopylae, in the way he handed over the military divisions and at the speed with which he gave them to the battlefield.

In front of the Persians' many-armed army, Leonidas with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians put up brave resistance, taking advantage of the physical configuration of the position. When Xerxes sent him a messenger and asked him to deliver the weapons and surrender, the Spartan king replied "Molon lave," that is, "Come on," so that he will cause him to fight and prove his merit. The timeless "molon lave" has gone through history, has become a daily phrase and has given it eternal glamor.
